Tic-Tac-Toad

About This Game

Tic-Tac-Toad is a magical reimagining of the classic noughts and crosses game, set atop an enormous enchanted toad perched in a mystical swamp. Two players take turns placing their marks on the 3x3 grid on the toad's back, racing to get three in a row while blocking their opponent from doing the same.

What sounds simple is deceptively strategic. The best Tic-Tac-Toad players think at least two moves ahead — not just placing their own mark, but anticipating every possible response and cutting off winning lines before they form. Against a skilled opponent, the game becomes a quiet battle of prediction and counter-prediction that can go down to the very last square.

The game includes a competitive extended mode where the board scales up to 4x4 or 5x5 — suddenly requiring four or five in a row to win, and dramatically increasing the number of strategic options and outcomes. This is where the depth of the game really emerges.

Tic-Tac-Toad is the most relaxed and accessible game in the PlayToPromote library, perfect for players who prefer thinking over reflexes. It's also deceptively hard to master — most players assume they can play optimally, but consistent wins against skilled opponents require a very specific understanding of spatial control.

How to Play

  1. 1Players take turns placing their mark (X or O) on the 3x3 grid.
  2. 2Get three of your marks in a row — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal — to win.
  3. 3Block your opponent from completing their three in a row.
  4. 4In extended mode, connect four or five in a row on larger boards.

Pro Tips

  • The centre square controls the most lines — take it if you go second and your opponent doesn't.
  • Corner squares are the second most powerful positions — they participate in three lines each.
  • If your opponent has two marks in a line with the third empty, block it immediately.
  • On larger boards, think about building threats in multiple directions simultaneously.
